Obituary of Ann Hale Browne

Ann Hale Browne of Hackensack, New Jersey, passed away peacefully on June 13, 2026, at the age of 84 after a courageous struggle with numerous health challenges in recent years. Born on May 25, 1942, in Tenafly, New Jersey, she was the daughter of Frank and Anna Rita (Gorman) Hale. Ann was predeceased by her beloved husband, George Aloysius Browne Jr., a Hackensack attorney and business owner, whose untimely passing left her to raise their three young sons, the youngest only four months old. She met that challenge with extraordinary strength, determination, and grace, dedicating herself to providing a loving home and every opportunity for her children to thrive. She is survived by her sons: George Aloysius Browne III of Leonia, New Jersey; Bartholomew Aloysius Browne of Ellicott City, Maryland, his wife Katherine Mary Keefe, and their sons, Alexander Hale Browne and Aidan Thomas Browne; and Frank Hale Browne of Wayne, New Jersey, his wife Kathy (Staszewski) Browne, and their daughter, Samantha Hale Browne. She is also survived by two sisters, Denyse Faustini of Houston, Texas, and Theresa Caldwell of Princeton, New Jersey. She was predeceased by her sisters Anita Russo and Susan Callahan. She was also "Aunt Ann" to 14 nieces and nephews who she absolutely adored. A devoted educator, Ann spent decades teaching in New Jersey public schools, touching the lives of generations of students with her intelligence, patience, and encouragement. She also owned and operated General Poor's Retreat, a well-known tavern on Main Street in Hackensack, for ten years. Deeply committed to her community, she served for many years on the Holy Trinity Parish Council and was a cherished friend and neighbor whose door was always open and whose advice was always sincere. Above all, Ann treasured her family. She was a loving mother and proud grandmother who delighted in the accomplishments and adventures of her children and grandchildren. Ann embraced life with enthusiasm and curiosity. An avid golfer, she played many of the world's most celebrated courses, including Pinehurst and St Andrews in Scotland. She also loved skiing, making countless trips throughout the Rockies and the Alps, and was a longtime member of the Garden State Ski Club, enjoying regular excursions to Vermont. Her resilience, warmth, generosity, sense of humor, and unwavering devotion to family and friends leave a lasting legacy. She will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing her. A celebration of life will be held on Monday, June 22, 2026 from 2:00 – 4:00 PM at the G. Thomas Gentile Funeral Home, 397 Union Street, Hackensack, NJ, with a prayer service beginning at 3:00 PM.
