Obituary of Louis R. Montenegro
Louis "Big Lou" R. Montenegro, of South Hackensack and West Palm Beach, Florida, died on Monday, April 10, 2006, at Valley Hospital in Ridgewood, at the age of 88. Born in Teaneck, "Big Lou" will be sadly missed and will always be remembered for the help he extended to all his family and friends. He was very instrumental in the development of South Hackensack's industrial growth and the construction of Memorial School. He served as Mayor of South Hackensack for 20 years and also served as a township committeeman for over 30 years. He also served as tax assessor for South Hackensack, Lodi and Fort Lee until his retirement. For many years he was associated with MYD Realty of Hackensack. An Army Veteran of World War II he served in the military police and obtained the rank of Staff Sergeant. He was a member of the South Hackensack V. F. W. Post 8005. An avid golfer, he will be fondly remembered for the fashion trend he started, by wearing his famous ten gallon western cowboy hat. He is survived by his wife Mary Lombardo Montenegro, his daughter, Mary Joan Russell and her husband Richard of Oradell, his grandchildren, Darren and Suzanne Russell both of Oradell, two sisters, Josephine Garofalo of South Hackensack and Carmela Gaeta of Wyckoff, two brothers, John Montenegro of South Hackensack and Anthony Montenegro of Port St. Lucie, Florida, several nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, John and Frances Montenegro, two sisters, Helen Montenegro and Virginia Jury and a brother, Arthur Montenegro Sr. The funeral will be on Thursday, April 13th at 9:45 AM followed by a Funeral Blessing at St. Francis R. C. Church, 50 Lodi Street, Hackensack at 11:00 AM. Visiting will be on Wednesday from 2 - 4 and 7 - 9 PM.
