We knew him but briefly. A fellow volunteer - friendly, helpful, caring.
We knew little about him, other than what he shared with us at the Courtesy Desk when we were not running errands all over the hospital. We knew he was as proud of serving the hospital as he was of singing in the church choir - until Covid ended his participation in that. He was happy to show his friends the Tiffany windows at his Church, talk about his Lego builds, share his baking skills by bringing us amazing pies, cakes and other sweet goodies. He loved a good meatloaf or chicken pot pie and would share his finds with us. Oh, and he LOVED the Great British Bake Off and knew a lot of trivia about the hosts and the participants as he avidly read up on them! We would discuss the merits, or lack thereof, of the various participants and their creations, and were always surprised by the final winner!
We knew he spoke Spanish, which he had taught in school, and he was always pleased when native Spanish-speakers mistook him as one of their own - a smile would split his face as he recounted such stories and told us that he had told them that he was “Americano”.
When Pheroze discovered that he loved Classical music, he would burn him CDs to introduce him to versions that he thought Art would enjoy - and enjoy them he did! They would talk about music and photography and model railways as they worked the Lobby shift on Wednesdays.
Art, we will miss you terribly. Rest in Peace, friend.

Art was my husband's first cousin. I have known him for almost 40years. He was a quiet dignified man. It always struck me that he was never bitter or jealous. He lost his mom on Christmas morning when he was a child. He lost his dad the next year.
He was a middle school teacher in Hackensack for his career. After retiring, he volunteered at Holy Name Medical Center and at his church.
Art never married or had a family of his own. He always celebrated his extended family special occasions. We would always invite him for holidays. Most of the time he would decline. His shyness was always obvious. We all treasure the times he did attend
All our hearts are broken. Art died so unexpectedly alone.
Heaven has gained a quiet angel. May he have an eternity of paradise
