Obituary of Thomas S. Schaitberger

Thomas "Slark" Schaitberger died peacefully on April 18, 2024. He was born on February 24, 1934 in New York City to Moya (Nee Slark) and Henry Schaitberger. Tom entered the Navy at age 17 and served on the aircraft carrier Coral Sea from 1951 to 1955. Tom was very proud of his Naval service. After leaving the Navy, Tom met Anne Malagiere whom he married on September 14, 1958. Tom and Anne were married for 65 years. Tom worked for Public Service Electric and Gas Company for 38 years, starting as a meter reader and retired as a customer service representative. "Annie and Tommy" were a match made in heaven and throughout their long marriage were blessed with scores of family and friends whom they loved and made a lifelong impression upon. Tom was "Uncle Tom" to many nieces, nephews, grandnieces, grandnephews and the "kids in the neighborhood." Tom loved kids, sports, wiffle ball, the Cincinnati Reds, the New York Jets, fishing, dogs, nature, Florida and all things living; but above all, he loved his wife "Annie." Truly a life well lived in Christ. Tom is predeceased by his sisters Irene Massey, Moya ("Sissy") Van Steenburgh, MaryAnne O'Malley and brother Henry Schaitberger as well as brothers-in-law, Thomas Massey, Lester Van Steenburgh and Alfred Malagiere and nephew Kevin Massey. Tom is survived by his brother-in-law Eugene O'Malley, sister-in-law Concetta Malagiere, brother-in-law Thomas Malagiere and his wife Mary and a long list of nephews, nieces, grandnephews and grandnieces that he loved dearly, including: Patricia Price and husband William, Christine O'Malley-Moore and family, Kerry, Gerard, Brandi and Nicholas, MaryAnne Stellon and husband Andrew and family, Andrew, Jessica, Andrew Jr., and Brandon, Kathleen Wise and family, Kenny, Ashley, Brian, and Christopher, Eugene O'Malley, Kelly Anne King and husband Arthur, Richard Massey and his wife Elizabeth and their children, William Massey and his late wife Marion and their three children and Tom Massey and his wife Patricia and Debra Massey and her three children, Lester Van Steenburgh and wife Judy and Lester Jr., Eric, and George, William Van Steenburgh and family Theresa and Christopher, George Van Steenburgh and wife Lamara and George Jr., Davina and Marlo, Alfred Malagiere and his wife Pam and their son David, Michael and Sandra Malagiere and their daughters Meghan and Michelle, Richard Malagiere and his wife Angela, Kenneth Malagiere and his husband Jonathan Petro and Mathew Malagiere and his wife Katherine and their children Madison, Kayleigh and Finn as well as Anne's cousin Olivia Pagliaro and her husband Salvatore and their daughter Whitney-Anne Collins, her husband David and their children Dayton and Taite. Tom and Annie always treated their large extended family with unwavering love and devotion. The Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 A.M. on Tuesday April 23, 2024 at Holy Trinity R.C. Church, 34 Maple Avenue, Hackensack, New Jersey, followed by burial at Ascension Cemetery in Airmont, New York. Funeral arrangements conducted by G. Thomas Gentile Funeral Service, Hackensack.
