Obituary of William C. Iurato

IURATO, WILLIAM C., former Police Chief for the City of Hackensack, passed away peacefully on Sunday, September 25, 2011, at his home, surrounded by his loving family. A lifelong resident of Hackensack. he joined the Hackensack police force in 1952. He obtained the rank of Sergeant in 1957 and during that time he was the recipient of the Medal of Honor. He then went on to become a Lieutenant in 1965, Captain in 1971, and Chief of Police in 1990. He retired as the Chief on October 24, 1992. During his tenure, along with his brother and predecessor, Chief Anthony J. Iurato, they established the Hackensack Police Department into one of the nation's finest. He was a member of the Bergen County Police Chiefs Association, the New Jersey State Police Chiefs Association, the New Jersey Honor League, the New Jersey State Pistol League. and Hackensack P. B. A. # 9. He served his country during the Korean War being honorably discharged from the United States Army in 1951. He also was a member and past president of the Santa Croce Camerina Society, the Boat Jumpers of Hackensack, and the Lyndhurst Homing Pigeon Club. He was a parishioner of St. Francis R. C. Church of Hackensack. Beloved husband for 47 years of Ute (nee Rentzmann). Devoted father of Salvatore Iurato of Oakland, Karen E. LoFaro and her husband Carmine of Haworth, and Jeffrey W. Iurato of Hackensack. Cherished grandfather of Anthony and William LoFaro. Dearest brother of the late Rose Parisi, and Anthony J. Iurato. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews and many other loving relatives and friends. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday, Sepember 29th, at St. Francis R. C. Church, 50 Lodi Street, Hackensack, at 11:00 AM with burial following at St. Joseph's Cemetery in Hackensack. Visiting will be on Wednesday from 2 - 4 and 7 - 9 PM.
